I'm filled with the overwhelming need to give poor Lestrade a big hug!
I was hugely impressed with Lestrade this chapter. He stuck to his guns no matter what Mycroft threw at him. It broke my heart when he wrote that letter and prepared to walk away from his life rather than let Mycroft use him as a pawn.
I loved that he surprised Mycroft several times. Mycroft seemed sincere in his apology, as far as it went, but true to his character, he wasn't so much sorry about potentially wrecking Lestrade's life so much as sorry he might lose a Sherlock-wrangler. He wasn't so sorry that he didn't keep that resignation letter in case it might come in handy in future!
And the worst thing was that if he's just said, "can you check if Sherlock's using drugs, and if he is, can you help him get clean, please?" Lestrade would probably have agreed no problem :(.
We know Mycroft doesn't learn from all this mess, because he trie the same tactics with John when he arrives on the scene!
